Vienna Celebrates Dominic Thiem’s Outstanding Career in Farewell Event
Dominic Thiem, the former No.3 in the PIF ATP rankings, was honored on a special event called the “Super Sunday” at the ATP 500 indoor tournament in Vienna. Dominic attended and played an exhibition set against Alexander Zverev, whom he defeated to win his only major title at the U.S Open 2020. Many other tennis players and sports stars came together to honor the tennis superstar.
Thiem walked through a guard of honor that had his ATP Tour rivals like Frances Tiafoe, Jack Draper, and Matteo Berrettini. It also included his former coach, Nicolas Massu, and others like Boris Becker, Matthias Bachinger, and Tommy Haas. “It was an incredible journey. You were the most important ones, opponents and friends, and it was always a pleasure to be with you,” said Dominic Thiem. “It means so much to me that you were here today.”
Thiem is known for his dedication and hard work towards tennis. Since he turned to professional tennis in 2011, he has marked his territory in the tennis industry. Not to forget, he is loved and is a superstar in Austria. Before his serious wrist injury in 2021, he had won 17 tour-level trophies. He was courageous enough to make a comeback in 2022, but it didn’t go as planned, and in May 2024 he announced that this will be his final season on tour. He will play against Luciano Darderi in Vienna before he leaves professional tennis as he has one final ATP Tour event to play.
“I couldn’t have imagined a better last Sunday in Vienna. I hope to see many of you again on Tuesday. It hurts incredibly that the journey is over, but it was a wonderful time,” said Thiem to the crowd.
Tennis icons who have excelled in tennis, such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, will also be present to honor Dominic Thiem at the Wiener Stadthalle. These superstars are part of a pre-recorded tribute video. Thiem, along with Andy Murray, stands out as one of the two players with five Lexus ATP Head2Head wins against the Big Three.
“You were always a super guy, also off the court,” Federer remarked in German. “Always fair. Your friendship was important on the Tour. We always got on well, and it was great for me. All the best with the future, and huge congratulations on your unbelievable career, Dominic. I am sure we will see each other soon, but for now, have a great evening.”
Djokovic stated: “Thank you very much for all that you have given to all of us, but particularly tennis. I’m glad that you have the opportunity to say goodbye in Vienna. One last dance. I wish you a great tournament, with all your family members present, and celebrate it, because you deserve it, my friend. All the best.”
Zverev also paid his own tribute on court.
“First and foremost, I'm losing a friend on the Tour, but of course we also played the greatest matches together. But it's goodbye, not goodbye,” remarked Zverev. “I hope he gets bored in a year or two and comes back to the Tour again.”
