Next Gen ATP Justin Engel Defeats Coleman Wong

Justin Engel becomes the first NextGen player to win an ATP Tour match after defeating Coleman Wong at the Almaty Open. He is the first winner among the NextGen players born on or after 2007. After the win, Engel mentioned his devotion to Nadal and how the legend has inspired him to pursue tennis as a career.
Engel entered the tour as a wild card and showed tremendous performance to become the winner. Coached by his father, Engel has been practicing tennis since he was 3 years old. In an interview, he mentioned how he initially started with kickboxing but soon realized his love for tennis. Once he won the National Under-11 tournament, he never looked back and pursued his dream of becoming a tennis player like his idol, Rafael Nadal.
Engel also mentioned that he is a great fan of Cristiano Ronaldo and LeBron James. He disclosed some personal interests, including his favorite TV series, The Walking Dead.
The NextGen player revealed his talents beyond tennis, such as his ability to speak multiple languages, including German, English, and Romanian, while also understanding Russian.
Engel trains in his birth city of Nuremberg and won his first tour title at the age of 17. Despite his youth, he understands the challenges and competitiveness of the tennis world. He has worked hard since 2023, winning his first ITF World Tennis Tour title in May this year. He has also claimed three more ITF titles before winning his first ATP Challenger Tour this month.
Engel’s performance continues to improve, as seen in his recent matches. Earlier, he was ranked in the Top 1200, but the 17-year-old has since climbed to No. 395 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
He expressed disappointment at frequently losing in the third set, but his dedication and hard work paid off when he won the Futures Tournament in Austria. This victory kickstarted his career, boosting his confidence for future tours. Engel's growing confidence and motivation have helped him win several matches, and experts expect him to achieve even more success in the future.
